How long after oral herpes breakout is it safe to kiss?

Posted by admin on December 20th, 2008

How long after an oral herpes outbreak is it okay to kiss / have oral sex with a partner?

It is safer about 5 days after the outbreak has completely healed.

However, it is true that you can still spread it even when you don't have a cold sore and haven't had one for ages. Everyone with oral herpes is sometimes infectious in between outrbeaks - it is called asymptomatic shedding of the virus and happens 5-10% of the time with oral herpes.

I should know - my partner had oral herpes and we scrupulously avoided him giving me oral sex during and for a few days after outbreaks. I caught genital herpes from him giving me oral sex, and he hadn't had a codl sore in 6 months and nor was he getting one either - he was completely symptom-free. 70% of herpes infections are spread when the person has no symptoms.

Who can help me and tell me more about herpes symptom?

Hi all,

I am new. I want to know more information about herpes symptom. Can you help me? Who can share share something about it with me?

Thanks in advance!

Genital herpes symptoms can vary greatly from person to person. Most people never have any symptoms or ones that are so mild they may not recognize them, although some people develop painful and bothersome symptoms.

The primary outbreak of genital herpes tends to last longer and be more severe than subsequent (recurrent) outbreaks. Symptoms of a primary outbreak may include:

Flulike symptoms, such as fever, headache, and muscle aches. These symptoms usually get better within a week.

+ Tingling, burning, itching, and redness at the site where an outbreak is about to occur (prodrome).
+ Painful, itchy blisters on the penis, on the vulva, or inside the vagina. Blisters may also appear on the anus, buttocks, thighs, or scrotum, either alone or in clusters. They may be barely noticeable or as large as a coin.
+ Blisters can break and become shallow, painful, oozing sores.
+ Swollen and tender lymph nodes in the groin.
+ Painful urination.
+ Abnormal vaginal or urethral discharge.

Occasionally a person will experience symptoms months or even years after being infected, making it very difficult to identify the sex partner who was the source of the infection.

Recurrent outbreaks of HSV cause painful blisters that rupture, become sores, and heal after 6 to 12 days. Symptoms of recurrent outbreaks are usually limited to genital blisters, sores, and swollen glands. The blisters are most painful during the first 24 hours after they appear. Most people do not have flulike symptoms with recurrent outbreaks. Recurrent outbreaks are usually less severe and do not last as long as primary outbreaks.

Symptoms of genital herpes infections in both primary and recurrent outbreaks tend to be more severe in women than in men.

What is the length of time for the sypmtoms of a recurrence of herpes 2?

Posted by admin on December 18th, 2008

I have some tenderness but no visible discoloring or rash around a patch of skin on my right upper thigh. This has been going on for about 5 days. After doing some internet research, I think I might be one of the millions of people who have some form of herpes but do not know it due to very mild, almost symptomless recurrences. I have linked my skin tenderness to a possible herpes infection but I can't find any hard information on a typical recurrence's duration.

There is no set time period for HSV-2 recurrence. They can be triggered by physical or mental stress, other illnesses (cold, flu, etc.) but other than that, the recurrences are quite random. There are no studies that show clearly documented triggers. Herpes typically has a vesicular appearance which means that the pump has a clear fluid filled center. These lesions are typically preceeded by tingling, pain, or tenderness to the inguinal area (most often). If you want to know for sure, I would suggest going to your primary care doc and having him run a blood test for HSV-2. That way you know for sure what you're dealing with.

If you're relatively asymptomatic, then you may not require treatment, unless you're sexually active. The funny thing about HSV-2 that you don't hear on TV or in sex ed class is that contact with the lesions or their fluid can cause transmission. The lesions are not always found on the penis and can be in the inguinal or inner thigh region where condoms do not reach. So the best thing to do if you have a confirmed infections is to be on suppressive medication. This can be done with Valtrex, once a day (i'm sure you've seen the commercial) or with Acyclovir twice a day, which is quite a bit cheaper if you don't have a good prescription plan on your insurance.

I've attached an article if you'd like to know more. I hope this helps.

What are the symptoms of herpes/cold sores/canker sores on your lips?

Posted by admin on December 16th, 2008

on your face.

Just to clarify, canker sores are NOT caused by the Herpes virus. They have completely different causes (thought to be an overreaton of the body's immune system) and are not contagious. Symptoms of herpes (cold sores) are painful red bumps that become fluid filled blisters, which can burst and leave shallow red sores. Headaches, muscle aches, swollen lymph glands, and fever can also occur. Before getting a cold sore, some people might experience podromal symptoms, which are tingling and burning in the area where a cold sore will develop. Cancer sores, on the other hand, are yellow to white mouth ulcers with an inflamed red border.

What are the chances of catching herpes with a condom on?

Posted by admin on December 16th, 2008

I had sex with a guy a year ago who is rumored to have herpes, but he was wearing a condom that did not break. It only happened once, and he did not have an outbreak. Anyway, what are the statistical chances I caught herpes?

That’s rude…he is rumored to having herpes? You believe that did you atleast ask him don’t listen to he say she said bull you should’ve asked him but catching herpes while using a condom and he didn’t have an outbreak chances are very very very slim because you used protection and he didn’t have an outbreak if you used protection and he did have an outbreak though you could’ve gotten it by direct skin to skin contact if the sores were on his balls but if you had herpes it would’ve showed up 2 days after having sex with him any ways so you can’t have it and he didn’t have an out break so you can not have caught it the chances are real small

Can you be tested for genital herpes even if you dont have symptoms?

Posted by admin on December 14th, 2008

quite a few friends of mine sleep with the same person and found out she had genital herpes. Now they are all going to get tested. Will they be able to find out if they have it through a blood test?

Yes you can but it is hard as you can get false negative and false positives, if they have contracted herpes type2 they will soon know about it, you can rest assurred some if not all will have caught it, even if she was not infectious at time…..♥

How easy is it to spread herpes around?

Posted by admin on December 14th, 2008

Today my step sister received some frightening news, there is a 50- 50 chance she could have genital herpes. I'm also starting to worry because I'm afraid of her spreading it if she does have it! How contagious is it? Can you get it from sitting on the same toilet, using the same shower, or even sharing clothes? I admit I'm pretty ignorant on this subject. I would just like to know more information on this, because I really don't need to be catching herpes! Anything you know would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Also, i've shared makeup, lotions, and clothes with her in the past couple months, and I hang out in her room with her sometimes.. so does that give me a greater chance of catching anything? I am really paranoid!
She got it from oral sex, not intercourse. She is a virgin. I'm not sure if that makes a difference though.

Genital herpes is a viral infection mainly affecting the skin on or around your genitals, which you can catch through having sex, including oral sex, with an infected person.

Once infected with a genital herpes virus, it stays in your body forever. Some people with genital herpes have outbreaks of genital sores that keep coming back, while other people have no symptoms at all and don’t even know they have the virus in their body. So it's possible to transmit the virus to sexual partners even if you don't have symptoms (though this is less likely than when you have active lesions).

Mostly, you won’t know whether or not your sexual partner is infected with one of the viruses that cause genital herpes. In fact, most people don’t know themselves whether or not they are infected. So, when having sex with a new partner, it’s always best to follow these safer sex tips.

Protecting yourself and your partner

Always use a condom during vaginal or anal sex.
During oral sex, always use a condom to avoid direct mouth to penis contact, or a dental dam to avoid direct mouth to vagina or mouth to anus contact. A dental dam is a small sheet of latex that is held over the entrance to the vagina or anus as a protective barrier during oral sex. Keep only one side of the dam next to the genital area, remember to keep your mouth on the other side of the dam (don’t turn it over) and don’t reuse it.

Note. If you always use a condom or a dental dam during sexual contact, you significantly reduce your risk of catching or passing on genital herpes. However, a slight risk remains because the area of infected skin may not always be covered by the condom or dental dam.

If you have genital herpes

Avoid all sexual contact during an outbreak of genital herpes, that is, when genital sores are present.
Always follow the above safe sex practices between outbreaks, as the virus can be passed on even when no sores are visible.

Talk to your doctor about treatment options such as antiviral medications, which can reduce your number of outbreaks and help make them less severe and more short lived. The use of antiviral medications as suppressive therapy (along with condom use during sex) can help reduce the risk of transmitting the virus to a non-infected partner.
Discuss genital herpes with your partner. Your partner might consider having a blood test for the genital herpes virus. Even if the blood test shows your partner has also been infected with a genital herpes virus, safe sex practices are still recommended, especially when sores are present.

Herpes can be transferred from one part of the body to another during an outbreak, so avoid touching another part of your body, especially your eyes, after touching the affected area. Wash your hands often during an outbreak.

Can you contract herpes if you recieve oral sex from a partner who has herpes but no symptoms?

female to male, and no physical symptoms

Yes, herpes ( like all STD's) is spread through semen and vaginal fluids. If you come in contact with these fluids, you have put yourself at risk.

Will terramycin help get rid of herpes virus 1 in cats?

Posted by admin on December 12th, 2008

I believe my 2 cats have herpes virus 1, a friend said I should first try giving them Terramycin to clear their eyes up because it can also help the body fight of the virus. What should I do? P.S. I have 1 female& one male cat both adults& female is spayed.
Also one reason I may use terramycin is to clear up my cats eyes. But e does it help the cats body fight of herpes virus1?

Terramycin fights bacteria, not viruses..
However, terramycin may help prevent a secondary infection resulting from the sores caused by the herpes. I've used terramycin eye ointment with foster kittens with that before. It at least prevented it from getting worse.
Another thing you should try to get is Lysine which helps boost the immune system in a cat with a virus.
