During the last 20 years, the management of pregnant women with herpes has gone through several changes. A trial period lasting a decade during which c-section was used liberally to prevent transmission of the virus to the baby did nothing to reduce the risk. It is fairly clear that almost all of the very worst newborn infections occur in women with primary infections with virus in the bloodstream which is transmitted across the placenta. Rarely is a newborn infected by contact with a recurrent lesion during birth, although this clearly happens occasionally.
Valtrex is not harmful during your pregnancy.

it is fine to have an outbreak during pregnancy as long as you dont have one within a month of giving birth. then its too risky to pass on to the baby. you say that you husband has oral herpes and you have the "other" kind. you really probably both have the same strain, but oral herpes can pass to the genitals through oral sex and genital can pass to oral. but really, the strains are different. you likely have the same strain that your husband has on his month, just in a different area. that is a good thing, it is a milder strain and your outbreaks will occur less often and come even less often and be more mild as time passes.
References :
I'm not sure because I dont have herpes..BUT I do know this:

Women who have genital herpes are usually told they have to give birth by C-cection..why? Because the STD can spread to the baby's eyes and everything else in some cases..some women have given birth naturally, but most doctors advise that you get a C-cection..to protect the baby from catching it from you.

I hope your doctor does know, that way he can give you the best advice.
References :
Well, I don't have any personal experience with this but I have read that as long as you did not contract the virus while you are pregnant, the child should be fine. I'm assuming you are referring to genital herpes and not oral?
If you are experiencing an outbreak when you deliver, they may advise a c-section to prevent the spread of the disease to the child. I'm not sure if they would want you to use valtrex during pregnancy. That's a Q for the Dr.
Best to abstain from sex, I would imagine, to prevent the spread to your partner, unless he was the dear person who gave it to you in the first place!
References :
Edit: Oh Lord, I suspected you could contract genital herpes from oral but I thought that was an urban legend!! How awful! I'm sorry. I get a cold sore about once every 5 years and the thought of transferring it "elsewhere" is terrifying.

Yes, you can take valtrex during pregnancy. Have your obgyn give you a prescription however because they will know the right dosage. Also, when you are about 37 weeks pregnant you will want to start taking Valtrex daily to prevent an outbreak. Having an outbreak during Labor and Delivery can lead to severe problems in the newborn so its best to start taking the pills a few weeks before you give birth. If you suspect you have an outbreak when you are in labor speak up, you will need a c-section.
References :
Herpes can take any where from 2-30 days or longer if your immune system is strong enough to suppress it.
Keep an eye out for symptoms like painful itching, burning and or tingling sensations, flu like symptoms, swollen genitals, trouble or burning when you pee, blisters or open cut like sores appearing. If you have any of those symptoms then get checked out and tested for herpes at your doctor, gyno or local clinic.
I have oral and genital herpes.
References :
It can be as quick as seven to fourteen days but also as long as a few months before you notice anything. Go to Valtrex.com they have tons of information and a great video explaining everything from personal feelings to symptoms you may have if you have contacted the virus.
References :
It can take years, and the first outbreak you may not even notice if it is mild. This is why genital herpes is spreading so quickly, you can, if you have it, infect others without having an active lesion. So ALWAYS use protection and be very careful about whom you have sex with.
References :
RN

anyway once a person becomes infected, Herpes Simplex Virus lies dormant in the body, waiting for just the right conditions to become active again. There can be many triggers which activate the virus, such as eating arginine-rich foods (like chocolate, cola, beer, seeds and nuts); the onset of a cold or fever; sunburn; the menses cycle & any physical or emotional event that introduces stress to the body. Each person's triggers are different, but all herpes sufferers have one thing in common--worrying about the next outbreak adds even more stress, which just feeds the vicious cycle and makes it worse!
And there is no real treatment that can cure herpes, but antiviral medications can shorten and prevent outbreaks during the period of time the person takes the medication. For example Herpeset is a good (probably the best) product. It works by stimulating your immune system to fight the HSV virus.

It worked and is working for me!

I do not know if any pharmacies carry Herpeset but I do know that you should purchase it directly from the manufacturer and read more about the product here http://www.herpeset.com/?aid=749165 . In addition, daily suppressive therapy for symptomatic herpes can reduce transmission to partners...!

since 2005 I got 5 outbreaks! every outbreak every ~6 months. every spring and every autumn! that was very hard time for me! then I started to use the proper diet for me and some herbal treatment and listen "Bobby McFerrin - Don't Worry Be Happy" . Now I don't have any outbreaks for about ~2 years!

good luck!
